Tens of thousands of kids have participated in our bread spreading program, so when they offer suggestions-we listen.
In March, one of our little breads spreaders said, "We've been spreading bread to honor our heroes and help those in need. But I was wondering why we can't spread homemade biscuits to our animal heores and animals in need?" That was an "Ahhhhhhhhhhh" moment. So the Spread the Bread organization developed, with the help of our resident bread service-learning guru, Carol Lee Spages, Spread the Biscuits.
The program uses bread in the form of animal biscuits to spread love and smiles and engages more people to "bake a difference."

Have you ever thought about making homemade banana biscotti, gingerbread hermits to honor your favorite furry friend? The great thing about Spread the Biscuits that you can make it your own. You decide what biscuits to bake, which animal/s you’ll honor or help and just where your biscuit philanthropy will be delivered.
Boy, do those decisions get people talking or barking!
There’s a role for anyone who wants to be a part of this bread project – whether it’s organizing, baking, delivering, etc. We just encourage you to invite kids, families or organizations to be involved in whatever way they can. Also, you can make a difference with just a few dozen biscuits. You don’t have to worry about running a huge biscuit drive for your furry friends.

Who could use some animal “bread”? Are there animals in your neighborhood that have done something above and beyond—maybe in your eyes they are an “animal hero”? Animals can help humans in many ways: · Eyes for those who are blind (dogs and miniature horses) · Ears for those who can not hear · Hands for those who are mobility impaired (Capuchin monkeys are especially adept at this) · Dogs, pigs and miniature horses pull wheelchairs · Search and rescue animals · Trained dogs with sensitive noses to sniff out bombs, illegal drugs, and other contraband. · Companion animals provide emotional support for people in hospices, hospitals, and other situations in which loneliness and lack of stimulation are continual problems · Companion animals help those with autism connect with the world (parrots are especially good for this) · Dogs trained to alert their masters their blood sugar has dropped or they are about to have a seizure · Dogs trained to detect the early stages of some cancers through their sense of smell · Therapy cats can help humans lower their blood pressure and reduce stress by creating a calming environment when stroked
You can also call local animal shelters, animal hospitals, and pet adoption centers. Think about how many biscuits you think you could spread....

This recipe for homemade dog biscuits could be just the thing. Here's what you'll need:
* 2 cups Wheat Flour * 4 Tbsp. Vegetable Oil * 1/2 cup Wheat Germ * 1/2 cup Cornmeal * 1 gently beaten Egg * 1/2 cup Chicken or Beef Broth * 1 Tbsp. Chopped Parsley * 1 cup cooked chopped Chicken Livers
Preheat oven to 400F. Combine flour, wheat germ and cornmeal. In separate bowl, beat egg with oil, add broth and parsley, mix well. Add dry ingredients to liquid a little at a time, stirring well after each addition. Fold in livers and mix well. Dough will be firm. Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface and knead briefly. Roll out 1/2 " thick and cut into shapes. If you want to, shape the dough with your hands--just be certain the biscuits are a uniform 1/2 " thick Place on greased cookie sheets 1" apart. Bake 15 minutes or so. Keep in refrigerator or freezer. If frozen, be sure to thaw biscuit before feeding to pooch.
