Think about this...can even the smallest gift change a life? Karen Kiefer offered a simple loaf of bread to Harold Eckman, a war veteran, to thank him for his service. The gift brought to the surface a 61-year-old memory of a time when a piece of bread could keep a refugee alive one more day. This old soldier discovered more than just a buried memory. He re-discovered a sense of purpose. So what should she do? Let's see how this woman from Wayland, Massachusetts, reacted when her simple gift revealed a powerful memory. The bread wasn't the most precious thing Harold received from Karen. Her friendship is much more important. Spread the bread is an exercise in gratitude theory. Two psychology professors had people make a simple list each day of things that made them grateful. People who kept these lists had higher levels of alertness and energy, and experienced less depression and stress. Visit SpreadTheBread.org.
