Spread the Bread

Bread for our heroes and those in need.

Sun Baking a difference...

Now that you've decide to "bake a difference" in your own SOLAR OVEN, you'll need some recipes, right?  Here's a few to get you started, but we'd love to hear about your own bread creations.

How about making an oven out of a BOX?

Poetry Breads say so much...
Everybody loves poetry, so why not write some fun poetry and attach it to your favorite loaf of bread to give to another.  Your poem can match the season, reflect a holiday, an expression, or maybe the special flavor or history of the bread.  These poetry breads are also a fun classroom project for grades that are studying poetry and its influences.  Be creative...

Honor Breads salute our "heroes"...
Want to say thank you to your community heroes?  Spread honor breads to local police departments, firefighters, veterans, soldiers, teachers and more...YOU define your hero and let your bread and special note attached to the bread reflect your gratitude in your own special way.

What do bread and Halloween have in common?
We call it a "Sand-Witch-A-Thon" ....consider asking local catering companies, sandwich shops, grocery stores and restaurants to donate trays of sandwiches to feed those in need.  Kids, families, volunteers can dress up in costumes and collect and deliver the sandwiches around your community.  We did it in Wayland, Massachusetts last Halloween and it was a huge hit. Please e-mail us if you'd like the event template!!  info@spreadthebread.org

Host a BREAD DRIVE
There's so many reasons and ways to "bake a difference" in your community.  Considering hosting a commmunity-wide bread drive, asking anyone and everyone to bake their favorite bread, then wrap the bread with love and a special note and then drop the bread off a specific locations, during specific times.  Volunteers collect the bread and then spread it back into their community to honor local heroes and help those in need. YOU define the heroes and the need.  Download a Spread the Bread Starter Kit by clicking "Got Bread?" icon

Memorial Breads sent to Virginia Tech
Memorial Breads remember...
Spreading bread to honor and celebrate the lives of those who have gone before us is a profound way to express grief and respectful condolence.  The card attached to the bread can reference some of the personal and powerful traits and contributions of the person remembered, as well as sympathy for their loss.  Each bread is unique, as are the lives that they reflect.  Memorial breads can also be spread to a favorite charity of the deceased, remembering their spirit, their commitment, and their love of the organization and its mission.

far more than our abilities.”

Harry Potter fans, Spread the “Muggle Bread”
We might not all be wizards like Harry Potter, but we “Muggles” (“Harry Potter parlance for normal human beings as opposed to magic folks.”) still love our bread! So gather all the Muggles you know and make some of this amazing Muggle Bread.  These amazing spices will take you away…maybe to Hogwarts.  So join in the Potter mania and spread this recipe and spread the bread and make some more Muggles SMILE, maybe some wizards too!  Thank you, J. K Rowling for your continued inspiration!!!!

1 cup of vegetable oil

3 eggs

8 ounces of plum baby food (4 ounce jars)

2 cups of all purpose flour

1 teaspoon of ground cloves

1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon of baking soda

1 cup of chopped nuts( if desired)

1 cup of confectioners sugar

2 ½ tablespoons of lemon juice (be liberal, but you can also add some water if lemon is too strong)

Harry Potter Bertie Bott’s jelly beans (if desired)

Pre heat you Muggle oven to 350 degrees F

In large bowl, mix together oil, white sugar, eggs, baby food and food coloring.

In another bowl, mix flour, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, baking soda and nits.

Mix wet and dry ingredients together.  Place in grease bundt or large bread pan.

Put on a Harry Potter movie while bread is baking for 50 to 60 minutes.

Then combine the confectioner’s sugar and lemon juice.  Brush over top of bread while hot.  Once bread has cooled for 20 minutes, sprinkled on top of Muggle Bread Harry Potter Bertie Bott’s Jelly Beans—yum!!!  Spread the bread and enjoy the movie!!
